So great to be reunited with my sister!

Early on in my career after graduating, there were a few instances where I felt like I needed to go “back in the closet” and hide who I was for fear of being retaliated against and afraid of being seen as “less than”. It was not a fun place to go back to, and that was one of the motivating factors for me to get into the Talent Acquisition and HR space.
I wanted to be an advocate for others, to build cultures and communities where people felt safe, and to encourage it to happen knowing that I had gone through this myself…and that if I could do it, so could others.
Even when it was hard, and trust me, it was fucking hard…it got better.
I cannot thank my peers and colleagues enough for also celebrating who I am, to giving me opportunities to grow and elevate in my career, and believing in me 1000%. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t from them. You also know who you are, and I am forever in debt to you.
Pride month is about recognizing where we’ve come in the equality movement, where we still have yet to go, and those that have come before us to pave the path that we walk on today. It’s about recognizing the beauty that is the diverse people we are…and unapologetically showing the world who we are. It’s about strength. It’s about courage. It’s about opening eyes. It’s about allyship. It’s about taking back your power and living authentically in your truth.
Happy Pride, my friends. I love you all.
Oh, and to my husband Eric—as a kid I never thought I would be able to get married—and I love you more and more with each day that we’re together. 13 freaking years, my love! You are my rock and everything to me!!

This is not easy for me to say…
I’ve come a long way when it comes to accepting who I am.
It all started around middle school when I noticed that I was different. I didn’t know exactly *what* was different about me, but I knew from a very young age that I was different from my classmates, friends and family members.
I was always the exuberant kid that was constantly recognized for being a great “performer” and musically inclined. I was consistently known for “achieving” in school and the like…
…but deep down I knew I was different…and excelling in these areas was a way for me to be “known” for something other than being flamboyant, and maybe even sometimes feminine in how I acted.
I was bullied. A lot.
I remember one time my mom bought me a “come back” book with creative ways to have come backs for kids who would say mean things to me, single me out, call me names, make fun of me infant of others…because quite honestly I didn’t know *how* to be mean back to these kids.
It was torture.
Sometimes I would get so nervous and anxious about going to a school event or outing I would physically get sick and throw up because I was so nervous.
Things started to change in high school and although the bullying didn’t stop per se, I had friends whom I trusted enough to tell them who I really was. And they loved me for it. Celebrated it. You know who you are :) and I thank you for this gift.
It wasn’t until I was 18 that I had the courage to tell my parents, sister and other classmates about who I was…college really was the saving grace for me and I could “reinvent” myself.
My family was 1000% supportive of me coming out and have loved me unconditionally. I remember thinking to myself “how lucky am I to have a family that supports me for who I am”…and then immediately thinking “and how fucked up is it that I have to even say that…that there are people who are not as ‘lucky’ as me, and that have to deal with becoming homeless, rejected, and given an ultimatum”…

🎙️ ALRIGHT, STORYTIME! 🎙️
Did you know that I sang backup for Incubus at a concert once--in front of 13,000 people? It was one of the coolest things I've ever done! 🕶️
I got there on the stage with several other singers...and we were a surprise guest that the audience had no idea about. As we started to sing, the audience was wondering what was going on, as Brandon Boyd hadn't come on stage just yet...but as we hit the chorus, Brandon came out on stage, the audience cheered and made a sound that is not replicable...and we just JAMMED!
The energy was so electric and the feeling of singing to 13,000 people was a rush I won't ever, ever forget!
I would do it again and again and again...if I had a chance.

Being in a new environment can sure be intimidating. We’ve all been there. Being inquisitive shows your willingness for learning, and your humility! And that’s crucial to your success in your new position.
Gathering information to handle things correctly is ✨ ALWAYS BETTER ✨ than learning things the hard way that you do them incorrectly. So don’t be afraid to ask.

Some of my greatest learning has come from leaders that have taken a chance on me, and allowed me to shine--by asking me to do things that would normally be on their plate. It was a leap of faith on their part--but it ultimately allowed them to elevate to the next level!
Why delegate a task that you're great at to your teammate?
You can't do everything!
AND
Delegating tasks to your team helps give teammates a chance at bat to do something normally that falls outside of their scope, and therefore develops THEM! This adds an experience to their career and shows you what they're capable of!

With how awesome technology is today, it's now the norm to work remotely; not to mention the current situation that we are in. The internet is now our office. But how do you become an effective leader even if you're physically far apart?
⚡️Keep the lines of communication open.
Don't be the type of leader members are afraid to communicate to.
⚡️Stay in the loop.
It's easy to not care with what's happening in the company especially if you're remote. Waterfall information constantly!
⚡️Check on your team.
You don't know how they are if you're not asking! Really make sure you hear what they're saying and dig beyond surface answers.
⚡️Utilize the technology available to you.
There are a lot of apps that can be used, paid, or free! Want a chill "team-building" activity? Play an online game! My team and I played Among Us and it was really fun!
⚡️Include your team in decisions as much as possible.
You're already far away from each other. Minimize the feeling of separation by making them involved in the decision-making processes.
⚡️Clarify your tone during conversations.
Especially with text conversations! It's prone to misunderstanding.
