Asked two visitors from Sweden the question that makes Americans squirm: would you want to know exactly what your coworkers make? They talked it through for about two seconds. We talk about those salaries, so it is common for us. Nothing to hide. Here the number is a secret, and the state laws protecting your right to discuss it are barely a decade old. That silence is not protecting you. It protects whoever decided what you are worth. Do this instead: look up your state pay transparency law this week, then ask one person at your level what range the role posts at. You cannot prove you are underpaid without a number to point at. 💬 #payequity #salarynegotiation #careertips #jobsearch

Street trivia that stopped them cold: what percentage of people actually negotiate the first offer they get? They guessed 45. It is closer to 30. The other 70 percent take the first number and never find out what was still sitting on the table. Do this instead: when the offer lands, thank them, ask for the full package in writing, then come back with one specific number backed by the market rate for that role. You already have the offer, so that is your floor. 💰 #salarynegotiation #jobsearch #careertips #joboffer

Asked a group on the street what the average starting salary in the US is right now. They guessed 50,000. The real number is closer to 68,000. That 18,000 gap is how people end up anchoring their own offer too low before anyone even asks them a question. Do this instead: look up the real range for your role and your city before the first call, write the number down, and let their offer land first. You cannot negotiate a number you never checked. 📈 #salary #jobsearch #careertips #interviewtips

True or false on the street: Google once asked how many golf balls fit in a school bus. True, and versions of it still show up in interviews today. Nobody is checking your arithmetic. They want to hear you break a messy problem into parts out loud, so estimate the bus, estimate the ball, divide, and say your assumptions as you go. If you ever get one of these, narrate your thinking instead of guessing a number. The reasoning is the answer. 🚌 #interviewtips #interviewprep #careertips #jobsearch

Street trivia in San Francisco and he nearly nailed both numbers. Average rent on a one bedroom runs about 3,500 a month, and you need roughly 150,000 a year to live here comfortably. Run that math before you accept a relocation or a role in a new city, because a raise that looks huge on paper can be a pay cut once rent takes its share. Compare offers on what is left after housing, not on the headline number. 🏙️ #salary #costofliving #careertips #jobsearch

Free response round on the street: an employer offers you the job, so what is the one thing you do before you accept? She said say thank you, and she is right. Here is the second move most people skip. Always negotiate. Never take the first offer, because it is almost never the top of what they already approved for the role. Thank them, ask for a day, then come back with one specific number and one thing besides money, like a start date or extra PTO. ✍️ #jobsearch #negotiation #careertips #salary

Two people debated this one on the street and got there. Talking about your salary with coworkers is not illegal. Federal law protects that conversation for most private sector workers, and a company policy telling you to keep quiet does not override it. Silence is what keeps pay gaps alive, because the only party that benefits from nobody comparing numbers is the employer. Start with one coworker you trust and one honest number. 🤐 #workplacerights #salary #careertips #paytransparency

Street trivia, question five: the person who interviews you is usually the one who decides if you get hired. False, and they went five for five by knowing it. A panel settles most hires in a debrief you never sit in, where one unconvinced voice can sink you. So treat every interviewer as a decision maker, send each one a note that repeats your strongest example, and give whoever champions you the words to defend the hire. 🧑‍⚖️ #interviewtips #interviewprep #careertips #jobsearch

Trivia round on the street, and this one landed. An interviewer cannot ask your age. Same goes for your marital status, your religion, whether you have kids, and where you were born. If one of those comes up you do not have to answer it, and a polite redirect works fine: I would rather focus on whether I can do the job, so here is how I would handle the first 90 days. Knowing the line exists is what keeps you from answering something you never owed them. ⚖️ #interviewtips #jobsearch #careertips #knowyourrights

Asked a visitor on the street what SOAR stands for and got the same blank look most candidates give in a real interview. SOAR is the structure that keeps a behavioral answer from turning into a five minute ramble: Situation, Obstacle, Action, Result. Two sentences of context, name the thing that went wrong, say what you did, end on the number or the outcome. Write three stories in that shape before your next interview and you will stop freezing on "tell me about a time." 🎯 #interviewtips #interviewprep #careertips #jobsearch

Would you rather have an amazing boss and terrible pay, or a terrible boss and amazing pay? They took the terrible boss, and the reasoning beat the answer: you can always switch later. A bad manager is something you can leave inside a year. Underpaid years compound, because every raise after that is a percentage of a smaller number. Then they added the part most people miss, that the right answer flips as you get older and your time starts costing more than the money does. Optimize for pay early, for people later. 🤔 #careeradvice #jobsearch #careertips #salary

True or false: in California your employer has to pay out your unused PTO when you leave. True. Earned vacation counts as wages there, so it cannot expire and it has to land on your final check whether you quit or get laid off. Paid sick leave is a separate bucket and usually does not get paid out. Most people learn this after burning a week of PTO during their notice period for no reason. Check your state's rule, then check your last paycheck for the accrued balance line. 💰 #workplacerights #careertips #jobsearch #pto

Best time to talk numbers in an interview process: after they make an offer, not in round one. Once they want you, the leverage flips. His pushback was sharp though. California makes companies post a pay range, so why not just read it? Because those posted ranges run a hundred grand wide and you can land in the bottom half and never know. Use the range to confirm you are in the right ballpark, then let them say the actual number first. 🎯 #interviewtips #salary #negotiation #jobsearch

True or false: more than half of companies are already using AI somewhere in their hiring process. True, and these two called it without blinking. Their reason was the honest one, that it is less human work, so software makes the first pass through the pile. What that means for you is that your first reader is not a person. It is a parser matching your resume against the job description. Pull the exact titles and skills from the posting, keep the formatting plain with no tables or columns, and save the personality for the round where a human is actually reading. 🤖 #jobsearch #resume #careertips #ai

True or false on the street: the first offer a company gives you is the best they can do. False, and they called it instantly. Recruiters open below their ceiling because they expect a counter and have already budgeted for one. Saying yes on the spot just hands them the difference. Ask for 24 hours, come back once with a specific number and one sentence of justification, and keep whatever they move. 📈 #negotiation #jobsearch #salary #careertips

Asked two guys in the industry what works when a job search stalls. Both said coffee. One of them reached out to thousands of people, applied through LinkedIn over and over, and heard almost nothing back. What moved his search was meeting people face to face. If you sent 50 applications this month and got silence, trade ten of them for ten conversations: find someone doing the job you want, ask for 15 minutes about their role, and let the referral come from there. ☕ #jobsearch #networking #careertips #linkedin

Asked a group on the street for their worst interview story and got this one. Her friend applied for a technical role and listed a coding language she could not actually write. Mid-interview they said share your screen. She had to say I can't. That is the real risk of padding a resume: every skill on it is a live demo waiting to happen. List what you can do under pressure, and move the rest into a "familiar with" line where nobody asks you to prove it on a call. 😬 #interviewtips #resume #jobsearch #careertips

I asked two people what advice they would give someone struggling in their job search. First answer: it is a numbers game, apply to as many as possible. That was the 14th person that day to say the exact same thing. The second answer was the one worth keeping: know your skill set, know what makes you a unique candidate, find the thing that sets you apart. Volume gets you rejections faster. Specificity gets you interviews. 🎯 #jobsearch #careertips #interviewtips #jobhunt

Would you rather: startup equity that might be worth millions, or a guaranteed 20,000 dollar raise starting now? They took the guaranteed money, and the reason was one word, safe. Equity is a lottery ticket with a four year lockup and a strike price you do not control. Cash is real, it raises the base every future offer gets measured against, and it does not depend on an exit. Take the equity when you can afford for it to be worth zero. 📈 #careertips #salary #equity #jobsearch

Last question of the game: true or false, women on average get offered less than men for the same role. True. He called it in half a second, because everyone knows. The gap starts at the offer, not at the raise, so it compounds for the rest of a career. Walk in with a researched range instead of a single number, and never answer the expected-salary question first. 💰 #payequity #salary #negotiation #careertips

True or false on the street: your employer can legally monitor your Slack messages. True, and both of them guessed right and still looked a little sick about it. Company devices, company accounts, company channels, all of it is fair game, and most policies spell it out in a document you signed on day one. Run your job search on your own phone, your own laptop, your own email. 💬 #worklife #careertips #jobsearch #workplace

He is sitting on three offers, so I asked the only question that matters: how did you get in the door? Referrals. Almost every interview he got came through one, and here is the part people miss, he gets referrals from people he has never met. A cold conversation that ends in a referral beats a warm application every time. Find someone one level above you at the company, ask about the team, then ask if they would be comfortable referring you. 🤝 #jobsearch #networking #careertips #referrals
